दि. ३ ते ५ ऑगस्ट २००७ रोजी पुण्यात एक राष्ट्नीय बैठक झाली. ही बैठक भारतीय मुस्लिम महिला आंदोलनाची बैठक होती. देशभरातील सुमारे तीस मुस्लिम महिला प्रतिनिधी या बैठकीला उपस्थित होत्या.
दिल्ली, कर्नाटक, उ. प्र., राजस्थान, म. प्रदेश, गुजरात, ओरिसा, छत्तीसगड, पं. बंगाल, महाराष्ट्न् तसेच काश्मीर इ. राज्यांमधून भारतीय मुस्लिम महिला आंदोलनाला पाठिंबा मिळाला असून सदस्यसंख्या वाढत आहे.
सुमारे दोन वर्षांपूर्वी या आंदोलनाची प्रक्रिया सुरू झाली होती. वेगवेगळया प्रांतांमध्ये मुस्लिम महिलांशी संपर्क करताना रझिया पटेल, झकिया गौहर नूरजहाँ, सफिया नियाझ तसेच नाईश हसन यांना असे आढळून आले की, मुस्लिम महिलांचे प्रश्न केवळ बुरखा आणि तलाक इतकेच नसून त्या पलीकडील आहेत.
१९८६ शाहबानो प्रकरण ते १९९३ मध्ये बाबरी मशीद हिंदुत्ववादी पक्ष संघटनांकडून उद्ध्वस्त केली त्या घटनेपर्यंत प्रचंड उलथापालथी भारतीय मुस्लिम स्त्रीच्या जीवनात घडल्या. शिवाय स्वातंत्र्योत्तर काळात तिच्या प्रश्नांचे राजकारण केले गेले. त्या सगळया गोष्टींचा परिणाम तिच्या मानवी हक्कांवर तर झालाच शिवाय तिच्या नागरी हक्कांपासूनही तिला वंचित राहावे लागले. तिची काही भूमिका असू शकते, तिचे काही म्हणणे असू शकते याबाबत सत्ताधारी तर बेदरकारपणे दुर्लक्ष करतच होते; पण सामाजिक, राजकीय चळवळींमध्येही तिचा प्रश्न फारसा आला नाही. या सर्व पार्श्वभूमीवर मुस्लिम महिला जेव्हा अनेक प्रश्न उपस्थित करताना दिसल्या तेव्हा हे स्पष्ट झाले की, त्यांचे प्रश्न शिक्षण, सुरक्षा, रोजगार आणि कायदे हे तर मुख्यत्वे करून आहेतच शिवाय धर्माची परिभाषा करायचा अधिकार मिळणं, समाजाचं प्रतिनिधित्व करायचा हक्क मिळणं मुस्लिम स्त्री नेतृत्व पुढे येणं हे देखील तिचे मुद्दे आहेत.
एकीकडे अंतर्गत पुरुषशाही आणि धर्ममार्तंडांशी तिला लढायचं आहे, त्यातून शाहबानो, इमराना, गुड़ीया घडत राहतात, तर दुसरीकडे `समाजासाठी तिला लढायचं आहे. एकीकडे ती `मायनॉरिटी विदिन मॉयनारिटी' आहे तर दुसरीकडे तिचे स्वत:चे प्रश्न समाज आणि स्वत;च्या समाजाची स्थिती यापेक्षा वेगळे असू शकत नाहीत.
अंतर्गत पुरुष प्रधानतेशी लढताना बहुसंख्याक समाजातील सांप्रदायिकता आणि पुनरुज्जीववादावर तिच्या प्रश्नांचा वापर तिच्याच समाजाविरुद्ध जेव्हा करत असतो, तेव्हा तिचा लढा गुंतागुंतीचा होतो. जेव्हा गुजरातसारखी मुसलमानांचा वंशविच्छेद करण्यासाठी हिंदुत्ववादी शक्ती उभी राहते तेव्हा केवळ तिच्यावर बलात्कार होत नाही तर तिच्या गर्भातील मूल पोट फाडून त्रिशूळाच्या टोकावर नाचवलं जातं इथपर्यंत ती किंमत चुकवते.
