पुण्यापासून दीड-दोन तासांच्या अंतरावरचं, राजगुरुनगरच्या पुढे जवळपास अठरा किलोमीटर अंतरावर असलेलं पाबळ गाव! आणि गावापासून काहीसा दूर असा कलबाग दांपत्यानं वसवलेला विज्ञान-आश्रम!
इ.स. १९८० साली डॉ. कलबाग यांनी गुरुकुल पद्धतीचा हा विज्ञान आश्रम पाबळ गावात स्थापन केला. एकीकडे पुस्तकी शिक्षणाला पूर्ण नकार देणारं, प्रत्यक्ष ज्ञानानुभव आणि कार्यानुभव देणारं विज्ञाननिष्ठ शिक्षण आणि दुसरीकडे सुविचार, ध्यानधारणा यातून मुलांवर संस्कार करीत, प्रमाणिकता, सत्यता, अविरत प्रयत्न अशा जीवनमूल्यांची ओळख करून देत त्यांना `चांगलं' माणूस म्हणून घडवणारी आश्रमपद्धती या दोन्हींचा सुंदर मिलाफ म्हणजे विज्ञान-आश्रम!
विद्याताइंर्च्या बरोबर या विज्ञान-आश्रमात जाण्याचा योग मला अलीकडेच आला. खरं तर विद्याताइंर्नी सुरू केलेल्या, तरुण पिढीशी संवाद साधण्याच्या उपक्रमाचा एक भाग म्हणून आम्ही तिथं गेलो पण यावेळी मन थोडंसं साशंक होतं. कारण ज्या मुलांच्या समोर बोलायचं होतं ती मुलं होती दहावी किंवा बारावी नापास. एखाद दुसरा बारावी पास, पण बहुतेक जण लौकिकदृष्ट्या अपयशी! अशा मुलांच्या समोर बोलायचं म्हणजे थोडं कठीणच होतं.
सुरुवातीला विद्याताइंर्नी आसाराम लोमटेंच्या `इडा पीडा टळो' या कथासंग्रहातील एक कथा सांगितली. कथा सांगता सांगता मुलांना सहज आपलंसं करून घेतलं. मुलं थोडी सैलावली पण तरीही शैक्षणिक अपयशामुळे त्यांच्या मनाची ठेवण नेमकी कशी झाली असेल याचा अंदाज मला येत नव्हता. त्यांच्याशी बोलताना, त्यांच्या मनात निराशा असलीच तर ती चुकीची आहे हे त्यांना सांगण्याच्या दृष्टीनं मी म्हणाले, ``आज तुमच्या वयातल्या मुलांकडे ठामपणे निर्णय घेण्याची क्षमता असते. आम्ही असे त्या वयात स्वत:चे निर्णय स्वत: घेत नव्हतो. अकरावी पास झाले की पुढे कॉलेजमध्ये आणि पदवी मिळाली की नोकरी... असा आधीच्यांनी घालून दिलेल्या रस्त्यावरूनच आमच्या पिढीचा प्रवास झाला. स्वत:तल्या क्षमतांचाही पत्ता नव्हता आणि त्या क्षमता सिद्ध करण्यासाठी आजच्या मुलांसमोर जसे हजारो पर्याय खुले आहेत, तसे पर्यायही आमच्यासमोर नव्हते. डॉक्टर अथवा इंजिनिअर होणं, हे आमच्या काळातलं मोठ्यात मोठं स्वप्न होतं. पण आज सगळंच बदललं आहे. आज मुलांचा कल व्यावसायिक शिक्षणापेक्षा पुस्तकी शिक्षणाकडे अधिक आहे. शिवाय यशस्वितेच्या व्याख्याही बदललेल्या आहेत. उत्तम शिक्षण घ्यावंच, चांगलं आणि भरपूर वाचन करावंच पण समजा, काही कारणांमुळे हे साध्य नाही झालं तर निराश होण्याचं कारण नसतं... काही मुलांना नसते पुस्तकी शिक्षणात गती! ते साचेबद्ध अभ्यासक्रम शिकण्यात त्यांचं मन रमत नाही. कित्येकदा इंग्लिश, गणितसारख्या विषयात बुद्धीही कमी पडते. पण म्हणून तिथंच आयुष्य थांबत नाही. स्वत:च्या पायांवर उभं राहण्यासाठी फक्त पुस्तकी शिक्षण किंवा पदवीच उपयोगी पडते म्हणून कुणी सांगितलं? सुतारकाम आहे, गवंडीकाम आहे, रंगकाम... शिवणकला.. उत्तम खाणावळ चालवणं... इलेएटि्निशउायनचे कोर्सेस... वाहनांची दुरुस्ती... गॅरेजमध्ये मेक्रॅनिक म्हणून काम करणं.. ट्नीप्स आयोजित करणं... रिक्षा चालवणं... करणाऱ्याला काय करावं हा प्रश्नच पडू नये इतके उद्योग उपलब्ध आहेत आणि महत्त्वाचं म्हणजे कमीपणा कुठल्याच व्यवसायात नाही. आपण जे काम करतो ते आपली प्रतिष्ठा वाढवणारंच आहे हा विश्वास प्रथम आपल्याला हवा. कुठल्याही कामाला प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त करून देणं ही तर आपली कसोटी असते!... मुंबईसारख्या शहरात पेपर टाकणं, दुधाच्या पिशव्या, निवडलेल्या भाज्या घरोघर पोहोचवणं... सगळी कामं गरजू मुलं करतात. जगण्यासाठीच्या धडपडीचं एक प्रतीक म्हणजे मुंबईची लोकल. सुरुवातीला लोकलमध्ये रुमाल, पर्स विकणारी मुलं हळूहळू स्वत:चं दुकान थाटतात. इच्छा आहे तिथं मार्गही असतो. म्हणून पहिली गोष्ट आपल्या मनाला शिकवायची आहे ती म्हणजे सकारात्मक विचार करणं! मला `हे जमणार नाही', `ते जमणार नाही' असं म्हणत बसण्यापेक्षा मला काय काय जमतं, येतं त्याची यादी किती मोठी होते हे पाहायला हवं.... आपल्याला माणसाचा जन्म मिळालाय. आपलं शरीर धडधाकट आहे, आपल्याला विचार करता येतो, पाहता येतं, ऐकू येतं, बोलता येतं. आणखी काय हवं असतं आपल्याला स्वत:ला सिद्ध करायला?... बरीचशी मुलं ही पैलू न पडलेले हिरेच असतात. आपली आवड काय आहे, आपल्याला नेमकी कशात गती आहे हे जर ओळखता आलं तर ती सुरुवातच असते आपल्या `घडण्याची'!... तुम्ही पुस्तकी अभ्यासक्रमाच्या बाहेर वेगळं काहीतरी शिकता आहात. तुमच्या भविष्याच्या संदर्भात तुमच्या मनात काही शंका, प्रश्न असतील तर आपण सारे मिळून त्यावर मोकळेपणानं बोलू या.''
मला वाटलं होतं, मला फारसा प्रतिसाद मिळणार नाही पण केवळ चार दोनच नव्हे तर तिथं असलेली सगळी मुलं अगदी मनापासून, भरभरून बोलली. सर्व मुलांचा सुरुवातीचा अनुभव समानच होता. ``इथं आल्या आल्या वाटलं की उगाचच आलो. काय करणार इथं? त्यात परत शिवणकाम, स्वयंपाक असली बायकांची कामं पहिले तीन महिने शिकावी लागली. हेच शिकायचं तर इथं कशाला आलो असंही वाटून गेलं. पण नंतर नंतर या कामातही मन रमायला लागलं. आपल्याला पोळी करता येते, खाण्यापिण्याचे पदार्थ करता येतात याचा आनंद व्हायला लागला. हातानं एखादी कला/विद्या शिकणं यात मोठा आनंद आहे हे कळायला लागलं.''
``वर्षभराच्या अभ्यासक्रमात आम्ही `गृह व आरोग्य', `पशुपालन व शेती', `इलेक्टि्न्कल कामं', `सुतारकाम, बांधकाम यासारखे वर्क्सशॉप्स हे सगळं चार विभागात प्रत्येकी तीन महिन्यात शिकतो. ही चारही प्रकारची कामं जीवनातील अत्यंत आवश्यक कामं आहेत. आता कुठेही जावं लागलं तरी कुणावाचून काही अडणार नाही, एकट्याला सगळं करता येईल हा आत्मविश्वास आला. अगदी भूक लागली तर काहीतरी करून खाता येतं. त्यासाठी यापुढे कुणावर अवलंबून राहावं लागणार नाही हा स्वयंपूर्णतेचा अनुभव आला.''
``इथं आम्हांला फक्त उदरनिर्वाहाच्या दृष्टीनं स्वावलंबी बनवणारं शिक्षण मिळतं असं नाही तर इथं आमचं क्रॅरॅक्टरच घडतं. उत्तम संस्कार आमच्यावर होतात. विचार करण्याची, जीवनाकडे बघण्याची दृष्टीच बदलते. इथं येण्यापूर्वीचे आम्ही आणि इथून जातानाचे आम्ही यात फरक असतो. आम्हांला इथं जे काही मिळालं ते आम्ही आमच्यापुरतंच ठेवलं नाही. गावी गेल्यावर तिथल्या मुलांना सांगतो, उनाडपणा करीत फिरणाऱ्या मुलांना इथं पाठवण्याचा विचार आम्ही करतो.''
फर्ग्युसन कॉलेजमध्ये शिकणारी अपूर्वा तिथं सुट्टीतले कोर्सेस करते. ती म्हणाली, ``गावात राहायला आपण पात्र नाही ही जाणीव इथं आल्यावर झाली. आपण दहा-बारा वर्षं पुण्यातल्या शाळेत, कॉलेजात शिकतोय पण आपल्याला स्वत:ला काहीसुद्धा करता येत नाही. फक्त पुस्तकी शिक्षणच घेतलं आपण. जगायला उपयोगी असं काहीच शिकलो नाही. हातानं शिकणं काय असतं आणि किती आनंद देणारं असतं हे इथं आल्यावर कळलं. मी फर्ग्युसनमध्ये आहे पण मला शेती करायची आहे. आधुनिक पद्धतीनं शेती कशी करावी हे मी शिकतेय. इथं आल्यावर मी गायींचं दूध काढायला शिकले. मला गोठाही साफ करता येतो. बाकी तीन विभागातलं शिकणंही चालू आहेच.''
शिस्त आणि स्वयंपूर्णता ही या आश्रम जीवनाची महत्त्वाची वैशिष्ट्य! ही दोन मूल्यं पुढे जीवन यशस्वी करायला सर्वाधिक मदत करतात. या सर्व मुलांना इथून बाहेर पडल्यावर आपापल्या गावी जाऊन स्वतंत्र उद्योग करायचा आहे. कुक्कुटपालन... पॉलीहाऊस.. .शेती.. सुतारकाम... स्वयंपाक... काहीही! हे सगळं शिक्षण जगण्यासाठी आवश्यक असलेलं आणि हातांनी शिकायचं असलेलं शिक्षण आहे. इथं वह्या-पुस्तकं नाहीत, पाठांतर नाही, मार्कांची स्पर्धा नाही. हे शिक्षण घेऊन इथून बाहेर पडणारी मुलं दहावी-बारावी नापास असतील कदाचित, पण जीवनाविषयी ती कमालीची आशावादी आहेत आणि हे बळ त्यांना या विज्ञान-आश्रमानं दिलं आहे.
तिथं जाताना वाटलं होतं, दहावी-बारावी नापास झालेली मुलं आपल्यासमोर असणार आहेत. कॉलेज, शहर, मित्रमैत्रिणी सगळं मागे टाकून ती इथं आलेली आहेत. पाबळच्या उजाड, रखरखीत भागात किमान सोयी उपलब्ध करून दिलेल्या आश्रमात ती राहताहेत. कसलीही करमणुकीची साधनं नाहीत, तरुण वयातील मौजमस्ती नाही, ही मुलं जीवनाविषयी निराश तर नसतील? ती आपल्याशी मान वर करून बोलतील तरी का? पण प्रत्यक्षातला अनुभव केवळ धक्कादायक होता. अत्यंत आत्मविश्वासानं जगणारी, स्वत:तल्या क्षमतांची पूर्ण खात्री पटलेली, कुठंही गेलो तरी आम्ही ताठ मानेनं जगू शकतो ह्या अभिमानाचा आनंद घेऊन वावरणारी आणि खूप बोलणारी ही मुलं पाहून आम्ही थक्क झालो. मनोरंजन आणि विलासी गोष्टीत रममाण होणारी शहरातील मुलं आणि जीवनावश्यक अशा किमान गरजांची पूर्ती होते ह्या आनंदात जीवनोपयोगी कौशल्य आत्मसात करण्यासाठी धडपडणारी आसाम, ओरिसा, बंगालपासून महाराष्ट्नतील अमरावती, कोल्हापूर, नाशिक, शिरूरपर्यंत वेगवेगळया परिसरातून पाबळच्या आश्रमात एकत्र जमलेली नापासांच्या क्रॅटॅगरीत मोडणारी ही मुलं!
तिथून परत निघताना आपल्याच जगण्याचा एक नवा अर्थ ह्या मुलांनी सांगितलाय असं वाटत होतं. पदवी नसताना, शिक्षण नसताना हातांचा वापर माणसाला जगण्यासाठी किती आत्मविश्वास देतो हे सांगणारे त्यांचे शांत चेहरे पाहिले. त्यांचे स्थिर, स्वच्छ विचार ऐकले. असा आश्रम नुसता सुरू करूनच नव्हे तर ते काम पुढे नेणाऱ्या डॉ. कलबाग दांपत्याच्या चिकाटीनं दिपून जायला झालं. आज डॉ. कलबाग नाहीत. श्रीमती कलबाग तिथंच राहतात. सारी मुलं त्यांना अम्मा म्हणतात. स्वावलंबी जीवनाचे धडे घेत अम्मांचं हे मोठ्ठं कुटुंब आपलं अस्तित्व हळूहळू पण ठामपणे सिद्ध करतंय हे पाहिलं.
इथली प्रत्येक वस्तू ह्या मुलांच्या परिश्रमातून आणि त्यांच्या कौशल्यातून उभी राहिली आहे. मग ते हात धुण्याचं बेसिन असो, वर्गातले बेंचेस असोत, त्यांचं वसतिगृह (गोल घुमटाकार बैठी खोली) असो अथवा जिथं हे विद्यार्थी काही शिकण्यासाठी एकत्र जमतात ती क्लासरूम असो... इथलं हे छोटंसं जग मुलांच्या हातांनी आकाराला आलेलं आहे. त्या साऱ्यामध्ये कदाचित शहरी सफाई नसेल, कदाचित ते ओबडधोबड असेल, पण सतरा अठराच्या वयातील मुलांना आलेलं हे उपयुक्ततेचं भान तिथल्या प्रत्येक गोष्टीत जाणवत राहिलं. आणि मनासमोर उभ्या राहिल्या शहरातील अत्याधुनिक प्रयोगशाळा, उंच उंच इमारती, महागडी फी आणि श्रीमंतीचा देखावा करणाऱ्या आजच्या शिक्षणसंस्था!
