परवा अॅक्शन प्लस नावाच्या मोहिमेअंतर्गत पुण्याच्या `प्रयास' नावाच्या संस्थेनं `समलैंगिकता' या विषयावर पंचायत भरवली होती. तिथे मला एक समलैंगिक व्यक्ती म्हणून माझी कैफियत मांडायला बोलावलं होतं.
खरंतर कैफियत या शब्दाशीच माझी आधी हरकत आहे. मी समलैंगिक आहे म्हणजे महादु:खीसुद्धा असणारच हा एक आयोजकांचा गैरसमज होता. मी आणि माझी समलैंगिकता हा प्रवास माझ्यासाठी एक कैफियत नसून एक सुखद घटना आहे. आज मी एक जर्मन भाषेचा शिक्षक म्हणूनसुद्धा माझी लैंगिकता उघडपणे मान्य करतो. आज मी स्वत: समलैंगिक लोकांची व्यथा मांडणारं मराठी नाटक ``ऑर्फेंीट'' सुद्धा रंगभूमीवर आणलं आहे. आणि हे वाटतं तितकं सहज नाहीये. हे सगळं काही इतकं व्हायला अजून दोन घटकांची साथ मला मिळाली. ते दोन घटक म्हणजे उमज व समज. उमजला जेव्हा समजची साथ असते तेव्हाच सगळं सहज होतं. आणि माझ्या समलैंगिकतेचा प्रवाससुद्धा उमज... समज... व सहज या तीन टप्प्यांमध्ये मांडता येईल.
मला साधारणपणे माझ्या वयाच्या १३ व्या वर्षी लक्षात यायला लागलं होतं की मी समलैंगिक आहे. आणि माझ्यासाठी ही खरंतर एक सुखद घटनाच होती. कारण कोणाबद्दल तरी आपल्याला आकर्षण वाटणं ही म्हणजे देवानं आपल्याला दिलेली एक भेटच. आणि हे आपल्याला अनुभूती म्हणून जगायला मिळणं म्हणजे खरचंच सुंदर. ती अनुभूती स्वयंभू असते, म्हणून ती माझी उमज ठरते. या उमजेला आपण भीती या भावनेशी तोलू शकतो. आपल्याला जेव्हा जेव्हा भीती वाटते तेव्हा नीट लक्ष दिलं तर आपल्या लक्षात येईल की भीती ही आपली उमज नाहीये. भीती वाटायला कधीही कुठेतरी व्यक्त किंवा अव्यक्त कारण असतं, जे मुळात बाह्यस्वरूपी असतं आणि खरंतर आपण जितके आपल्या अंतर्यामी जातो, तितकी आपली भीती आपोआप नष्ट होते. म्हणून भीती ही उमज नाहीये, पण प्रेमाची भावना मात्र नक्कीच उमज आहे म्हणून मला स्वत:पुरतंच विचारलं तर माझ्या समलैंगिक आकर्षणाची लाज वाटली नाही, त्याउलट आनंदच झाला होता. माझ्यासाठी माझी ही उमज म्हणजे एखाद्या वाढत असलेल्या रोपट्याला फूल येण्यासारखं होतं. या सुखाचं लवकरच एका मोठ्या भयानक समस्येमध्ये रूपांतर झालं. आणि या समस्येला कारण होतं की माझ्या आजूबाजूला फक्त भिन्नलिंगी लोकच वावरत होते. घरात आई-बाबा, काका-काकू, आजोबा-आजी, बाहेर शिक्षक व त्यांची पत्नी, शेजारीसुद्धा नवरा-बायकोच, एवढंच काय माझ्या मित्रांनासुद्धा मुलींबद्दलच आकर्षण वाटायला लागलं होतं. सिनेमात पाहिलं तर राजची प्रेयसी सिमरन व बंटीचं लग्न बबलीशीच. माझ्यापुरतं पाहिलं तर मी माझ्या उमजेला कधीच समजूनही घेतलं होतं, पण बाकीचे आपल्या लैंगिकतेला समजून घेणार नाहीत. या कल्पनेनं मला मोठी भीती वाटायला लागली. त्यांना तर समलैंगिकतेविषयी काहीच माहितीसुद्धा नसेल याची मला खात्री होती. जी काही पुस्तकं मी वाचली त्या सर्व पुस्तकांमध्ये समलैंगिकता म्हणजे एक आजार किंवा विकृती आहे असंच म्हटलं होतं. आणि तेव्हा माझ्या मनामध्ये विचारांचं मोठं द्वंद्व सुरू झालं, आपली लैंगिकता ही प्राकृतिक आहे का एक विकृती? आणि प्रकृतीमध्ये काय आहे व काय नाही हे सांगण्याचा अधिकार कोणाला आहे? आपल्याकडे पिढ्यान्पिढ्या चालत आलेल्या संस्कृतीला का स्वत: प्रकृतीला? कारण एक नक्की होतं: मी समलैंगिक आहे असं म्हटलं असतं तर सर्वांनी मला नाकारण्याची शक्यता होती, पण प्रकृतीनं मला नाकारलं नव्हतं, झाडं मला अजूनही सावली द्यायचे व फुलांना अजूनही सुगंध यायचा. फक्त माझं आणि प्रकृतीचं नातं विचारलं तर प्रकृतीमध्ये मला निर्धास्त वावरण्याचा अधिकार होता पण माणसांमध्ये आलो की संस्कृतीची बंद चौकट जाणवायची व भीती वाटायची. उमज व समज यांचं भांडण लक्षात यायचं. आणि म्हणून माझ्या लैंगिकतेबद्दल मला माझ्यापुरती वाटणारी सहजता इतरांपुढे नष्ट व्हायची. इतरांपुढे मी माझी लैंगिकता लपवू लागलो. मित्रांना, ``मलासुद्धा मुलीच आवडतात.'' असं खोटं बोलू लागलो, थोडक्यात माणसांच्या संस्कृतीच्या चौकटीत जागा मिळवण्यासाठी मी चेहऱ्यावर मुखवटा चढवला व काही काळात तो छान अंगवळणीसुद्धा पडला.
पण पुढे हाच मुखवटा मला आतल्या आत खायला लागला. माझ्या आत्म्याला, माझ्या विवेकाला आव्हान द्यायला लागला. माझ्या एम. ए. च्या वर्षी मला जर्मनीला जायची संधी मिळाली. तिथे एका जिवलग मैत्रिणीच्या, हेल्गाच्या घरी एकदा जेवणाच्या कार्यक्रमाला मी गेलो. तिथे हेल्गाचा एक मित्र क्लाउस त्याची लग्नाची पत्रिका वाटत होता. मलासुद्धा त्यानं लग्नाचं निमंत्रण दिलं. त्याची पत्रिका पाहिल्यावर मला धक्काच बसला. त्यावर लिहिलं होतं : ``क्लाउस वेडस् मार्टिन.'' अर्थात मला मनातून खूप आनंदसुद्धा झाला होता. क्लाउस समलैंगिक आहे व त्याच्या समलैंगिक मित्राबरोबर तो लग्न करणार ही कल्पना छान होती. आणि त्याच्या इतर भिन्नलिंगी मित्रांची त्याला साथ होती. ही सहजता पाहून मला आनंद व क्लाउससाठी सुद्धा वाटली. वाटलं की जर्मनीचं बरं आहे, इथे समलैंगिकतेला मान्यता आहे. भारतामध्ये अशी परिस्थिती कधी येणार? तोवर आपण युद्धकैद्यासारखेच वावरायचे काय? नाही, शेवटी मी तिथल्या सर्वांना सांगून टाकलं, मी सुद्धा समलैंगिक आहे. त्या सर्वांनी माझ्यासाठी टाळया वाजवल्या व त्यांची मला असलेली साथ नमूद केली. या घटनेनं माझा आत्मविश्वास वाढला. पुण्यात आल्यावर मी माझ्या आई वडिलांना सांगून टाकलं की मी समलैंगिक आहे. माझ्या आईवडिलांना माझी लैंगिकता समजायला व तिचा स्वीकार करायला खूप वेळ लागला. मला समजून घ्यायला त्यांच्याकडेसुद्धा या विषयावरची फार कमी माहिती होती. बुद्धीनं नाही तरी माझ्या आईने मनाने मात्र माझा मी आहे तसा स्वीकार केला. अर्थात तिला अजूनही सतत वाटत राहतं की माझं पुढे काय होणार? लग्न केलं असतं तर मला माझ्या म्हातारपणासाठी मुलं बाळं, बायको तरी असती, आता मला एकटंच राहावं लागणार म्हणून ती मला अधेमधे लग्न कर असा सल्ला देत असते. पण माझ्या आईला या समाजातल्या बहुतेक लोकांसारखं `लग्न' म्हणजे एक सोय असंच दिसतं पण माझ्यासाठी लग्नाचा थेट प्रेमाशी संबंध आहे. आणि माझ्या सोयीसाठी एका दुसऱ्या निरपराधी मुलीचं आयुष्य बरबाद करणं मला मुळीच मान्य नाही. आईने माझा स्वीकार केल्याने माझा आत्मविश्वास खूप वाढला व हळूहळू मी सर्वांना निर्धास्तपणे सांगू लागलो की मी समलैंगिक आहे. कुठेतरी मला या उघडपणाची लतच लागली. पुण्यातल्या समलैंगिक लोकांसाठी काम करणाऱ्या संस्थासुद्धा शोधून काढल्या. पण त्यांच्या त्यांच्यातल्या राजकारणामुळे मला त्यांच्याबरोबर काम करावंसं वाटलं नाही कधी. मला भेटलेले समलैंगिक कार्यकर्ते कुठेतरी भिन्नलिंगी लोकांसारखेच समलैंगिकतेची एक नवी चौकट बनवत चालले होते. मला माझ्या आणि त्यांच्या विचारांमध्ये मोठी तफावत जाणवत असे. मला आठवतं मी एकदा एका समलैंगिक लोकांच्या गप्पागोष्टींच्या कार्यक्रमाला गेलो होतो. त्या दिवशी त्या संघाच्या कार्यकर्त्याने सर्वांना विचारलं की पुढच्या वेळी अजून काही पुरुष येऊ इच्छितात आणि बाकींच्याची हरकत नसेल तर ते साडी नेसणार आहेत. संघातल्या जवळ जवळ सर्वांचीच याला हरकत होती. बहुतेक जणांचं म्हणणं होतं की आपण समलैंगिक आहोत, हिजडे नाही. मला हे सारं पाहून खरं तर खूप त्रास झाला. वाटलं की आपण एकीकडे एक चौकट मोडता मोडता लगेच दुसरीकडे एक नवी चौकट बनवत चाललो होतो. आपल्याला खरंतर सगळीकडेच एक चौकट हवी असते. बहुधा त्याची सवयच झालेली असते. आता भिन्नलिंगी व समलैंगिक यांच्यातला फरक हा काळा व पांढरा या रंगांसारखा ठळक असूच शकत नाही. मध्ये हजारो काळया व पांढऱ्या रंगांच्या छटा शक्य आहेत, त्यांचं काय करायचं? मी लैंगिकतेला एखाद्या ुटपट्टीसारखं पाहतो. पट्टीच्या एका टोकाला भिन्नलिंगी आहेत तर दुसऱ्या टोकापर्यंत हजारो, लाखो, करोडो शक्यता अंतहीन आणि म्हणून एकदा का आपण भिन्नलिंगी नाही असं लक्षात येतं, तेव्हा आपण भिन्नलिंगी नसणाऱ्या इतर अनेक शक्यतांना स्वीकारलंच पाहिजे, नाहीतर मग आपणसुद्धा `चौकटी' वालेच ठरू.
माझे हेच विचार मांडायला मी पुढे `ऑफबीट' या नावाचं एक मराठी नाटक रंगभूमीवर आणलं. हे नाटक बसवत असताना मला खरंतर खूप त्रास झाला. आधी मला वर्षभर सेंन्सॉरचं सर्टिफिकेटच दिलं जात नव्हतं. सेन्सॉरवाल्यांचं म्हणणं तर अजूनच चमत्कारीक होतं, त्यांच्या मते ``मराठी समलैगिंकता नसते.'' मराठीकरणाचे पडसाद पार इथपर्यंत जाऊन पोचतील याची मला मुळीच कल्पना नव्हती. असो. पॅनलवरच्या काही जणांच्या मदतीने शेवटी मला नाटक रंगभूमीवर आणण्याची परवानगी मिळाली; पण पुढे मला या नाटकात काम करण्यासाठी चांगले कलाकारच मिळेना. पुण्यातल्या बहुतेक `प्रायोगिक कलाकारांनी' नाटक वाचून काम करण्याचं नाकारलं. शेवटी मग मी समलैंगिक लोकांनाच जमा केलं व त्यांच्याकडे अभिनयाचा अनुभव नसताना नाटक एकदाचं बसवलं. माझ्या नाटकात आजीच्या मुख्य भूमिकेचं काम दीपा लागू यांनी केलं. त्यांनी मला, नाटकाला व आमच्या विषयाला दिलेली साथ पाहता त्यांचे आभार शब्दात मांडणं अवघड आहे. समलैंगिक बाईची भूमिका करण्यासाठीसुद्धा माझीच एक भिन्नलिंगी मैत्रीण उज्ज्वला मेहेंदळे पुढे सरसावली. नाटकाचे आतापर्यंत पाच प्रयोग झाले आहेत व हे नाटक आमच्यासाठी, कलाकारांसाठी व प्रेक्षकांसाठी सर्वांसाठीच एक नवा अनुभव आहे. आतापर्यंतच्या प्रेक्षकांच्या प्रतिक्रिया पाहून लक्षात येतं की नाटक प्रेक्षकांना नक्कीच विचार करायला लावतं, त्यांचे पूर्वग्रह दूर करतं. माझ्या नाटकांत मी भिन्नलिंगी, समलिंगी पुरुष, स्त्री, हिजडा वगैरे सर्वांना एकत्र आणण्याचा प्रयत्न केला आहे व नाटकाच्या अंताला आम्ही एका अशा समाजाची रचना करतो जिथे माणसाला त्याच्या माणूसपणामुळे एक ओळख असेल. त्याच्या लिंग, रंग, जात, धर्म वा लैंगिकतेमुळे नव्हे. अशा समाजात माणसा माणसाला त्याचं खरं स्वातंत्र्य, स्वराज्य अनुभवण्याची शक्यता असेल. त्यांच्या उमजेला एक सहज जागा असेल. अर्थात हे सगळं समजेमुळेच शक्य होईल. आणि म्हणूनच माझा व माझ्या इतर समलैगिंक कार्यकर्त्यांचा लढा हा चालूच असणार आहे. हीच माझी गोष्ट, हाच माझा प्रवास उमज, समज व सहज चा...
