फोर्ब मार्शल कासारवाडी येथील समाजकल्याण केंद्रातर्फे गेली १२-१३ वर्षे बचतगट चालवले जातात. आता जवळजवळ १८४ बचत गट तयार झाले आहेत. बचत गटातील महिलांमार्फत वस्तीपातळीवर विविध कार्यक्रम राबवले जातात. यामध्ये जाणीव जागृती कार्यक्रम, स्वच्छता मोहीम, महिला अत्याचार विरोधी मोहीम अशा उपक्रमांचा समावेश असतो. बचत गटातील सर्वच महिला यामध्ये सहभागी होतात असं नाही. तर त्यातील काही महिला या प्रकारचं समाज प्रबोधनाचं कार्य करतात. त्यांच्या गटाला `कोअर ग्रुप' म्हणतात. कोअर ग्रुपमध्ये साधारणपणे ३० ते ३५ महिला आहेत. वर्षभर त्यांचे विविध कार्यक्रम सुरू असतात. आरोग्य शिबिर, रक्तदान शिबिर, नेत्रशिबिर, स्तन क्रॅन्सर तपासणी, रक्त तपासणी शिबिर असे विविध उपक्रम त्यांच्यातर्फे राबवले जातात. अर्थात या सर्व कामासाठी आर्थिक आणि नैतिक पाठबळ फोर्ब्ज मार्शल कंपनीकडूनच दिलं जातं.
या महिला सामाजिक कार्यक्रम राबवतात त्याचप्रमाणे करमणुकीच्या कार्यक्रमातही त्या मोठ्या उत्साहाने सहभागी होतात. फॅन्सी ड्न्ेस स्पर्धा, विविध सण साजरे करणे, गरबा, सहली इत्यादी गोष्टींचा समावेश त्यामध्ये असतो. सुरुवातीला अगदी छोट्या जवळच्या परिसरात सहली काढल्या जायच्या. नंतर थोड्या दूरच्या सहलींचं आयोजन करण्यात येऊ लागलं. केवळ मौजमजा करणे हा या सहलींचा हेतू नसून या निमित्ताने इतर सामाजिक संस्थांना आपल्या कार्याची माहिती व्हावी, हाही त्यामागचा उद्देश होता. सहलीला एकत्र जाणे, एकत्र राहणे, गप्पागोष्टी, सुखदु:खाच्या प्रसंगाची देवाणघेवाण करणे यामध्ये एक वेगळाच आनंद असतो, हे या महिलांच्या लक्षात येऊ लागलं. या निमित्ताने चार भिंतीबाहेर डोकावण्याची व्यापक दृष्टी त्यांना मिळाली.
फोर्ब्ज मार्शल येथे व्यसनमुक्तीसाठी काम केलं जातं. प्रामुख्याने वस्तीपातळीवर व्यसनाची समस्या जाणवते. अशा व्यसनी माणसांच्या घरी भेट देऊन त्यांना व्यसनाधीनता या आजाराविषयी माहिती देणे, उपचारांसाठी प्रवृत्त करणे या कामी बचत गटातील कोअर ग्रुपची फारच मोलाची मदत होते. या महिलांसाठी आरोग्य प्रशिक्षण वर्ग सुरू करावा, अशी कल्पना फोर्ब्ज मार्शल वेलफेअर डिपार्टमेंटच्या अधिकारी मेघना मराठे यांनी मांडली आणि दोन वर्षांपूर्वी त्याला मूर्त रूप आलं. कोअर ग्रुपच्या महिलांनी आरोग्य सेविकेचा कोर्स पूर्ण केला आणि आता त्या वस्ती पातळीवर आरोग्याचा संदेश पोहोचवण्यास सज्ज झाल्या आहेत.
उत्साहाचा धबधबा असणाऱ्या या महिलांनी एक दिवस ठरवलं की, आता आपण विमानाने सहलीला जायचं. सर्वांनी एकमताने ठराव संमत केला आणि त्या तयारीला लागल्या. त्यासाठी पैसे जमा करणं सुरू झालं आणि बचत करून त्यांनी सुरुवातीला ३ हजार रुपये जमवले. विमानाने जायचं तर ठरलं, पण आता नेमकं जायचं कोठे, कोणती विमान कंपनी कमी दराने तिकीट देईल, कोणत्या ठिकाणी गेलं असता कमी तिकिटात प्रवास होऊ शकेल, अशा अनेक गोष्टी त्या पडताळू लागल्या. त्यानुसार बंगळूरू, हैदराबाद, अहमदाबाद आणि मद्रास या शहरांची नावं पुढे येऊ लागली. सर्व गोष्टींची जमवाजमव करताना, अहमदाबादला जाणं अधिक सोयीचं आहे, असं लक्षात आलं.
अहमदाबादमध्ये `सेवा' नावाची संस्था गेली अनेक वर्षे सामाजिक, आरोग्य क्षेत्रात कार्यरत आहे. या संस्थेला भेट देणं हेही अहमदाबाद शहर निवडण्याचं आणची एक कारण होतं. विमानाची तिकिटं काढण्यात आली. जाण्याचा दिवस ठरला आणि महिलांची उत्सुकता वाढू लागली. विमानात बसून प्रवास रणे हाच आता त्या महिलांच्या चर्चेचा मुख्य विषय होता. विमान हवेत झेप घेतं, तेव्हा कसं वाटत असेल? पोटात गोळा येईल का? आकाशातून प्रवास करायचा म्हणजे केवढं थ्रिल! अशा एक ना अनेक मुद्द्यांवर त्यांची चर्चा रंगत होती.
अखेर तो दिवस येऊन ठेपला. विमान मुंबईतून सुटणार असल्याने तिथपर्यंत जाण्यासाठी एस.टी. महामंडळाकडून सवलतीच्या दरात बस बुक करण्यात आली. एकूण ३१ महिला आणि २ सोशल वर्कर सहलीसाठी रवाना झाल्या. बसमधून मुुंबईपर्यंतचा प्रवास अतिशय उत्साहात आणि आनंदात पार पडला. एवढ्या मोठ्या संख्येने महिला एकत्र आल्यावर गप्पा, गाणी, नाच याला उधाण नसतं तरच नवल.
एकदाची गाडी विमानतळावर पोहोचली आणि `अरे बाप रे!' असे आश्चर्याचे भाव सर्वांच्या चेहऱ्यावर उमटले. विमानतळावर आतमध्ये प्रवेश केल्यानंतर सर्व प्रक्रिया समजावून घेता घेता नाकी नऊ यायला लागले. पण, या महिला थोड्याच मागे हटणार होत्या? आपल्या मोडक्या तोडक्या इंग्रजी, हिंदीमध्ये त्या सर्व गोष्टी समजावून घेत होत्या. एकदाचा बोर्डिंग पास मिळाला. बरोबरच सर्व सामान आतमध्ये गेलं. आता विमानात बसण्याचा क्षण जवळ आला होता. विमानाची वेळ जसजशी जवळ येऊ लागली तसतशी उत्सुकता वाढत होती. आता रांगा लावून विमानापर्यंत जाण्याची तयारी सुरू झाली. विमानापर्यंत नेण्यासाठी एअर बस तयारच होती. अशी बस आपल्याला विमानापर्यंत पोहोचवते याची त्या महिलांना माहितीच नव्हती. त्यातील दोघींना तर ती बस हेच विमान वाटलं. इतरांनी त्यांना त्याबद्दल सांगितलं त्यावेळी एकच हशा पिकला.
एअरबसने त्यांना विमानापर्यंत पोहोचवलं. विमानाला लावलेल्या जिन्याने सर्वजण विमानात शिरल्या आणि `याचि देही याचि डोळा' विमान पाहण्याचा अनुभव त्यांनी घेतला. प्रत्येकीला क्रमांकाप्रमाणे आसन मिळालं आणि सर्वजणी स्थानापन्न झाल्या. कधीही विमानात न बसलेल्या वस्तीपातळीवरील या महिला एक एक क्षण मनात साठवून घेत होत्या. तेवढ्यात पायलटचा आवाज आला. `लेडिज अँड जंटलमन...' विमान आकाशात झेप घेणार हे लक्षात आलं. विमान धावपट्टीवरून धावू लागलं आणि त्याने हवेत झेप घेतली. विमानाबरोबर या महिलांच्या स्वप्नांनीही अवकाशात झेप घेतली होती.
