प्रयाग हॉस्पिटलच्या पायऱ्या चढत असताना आत खोलवर कुठेतरी पोटात पोकळी निर्माण होत हेाती. पण मी त्या गर्दीत कुणालातरी शोधत होते. विद्याताइंर्नी माझा हात हळूच दाबला. डोळयांनीच आत जायची खूण केली. मी पाहिलं, अनंताच्या प्रवासाला गेलेले तें, अचेतन, निश्चेष्ट. क्षणभर असं वाटलं, त्यांना उठवावं आणि म्हणावं,``अहो, मी तुमच्यासाठी गाणं म्हणायला आले आहे.''
मी बाहेर आहे. माणसांची गर्दी वाढली असावी. बसायला जागा नव्हती. मी पायऱ्यांवर बसले आणि कुणीतरी मला विचारलं, `तुम्ही विजय तेंडुलकरांच्या कोण?'' नाते, हा शब्द इतका गूढ आणि विरळ आहे, त्याची व्याख्या एका साचेबंद वाक्यात करणं मला तरी केवळ अशक्य आहे. माझ्यासाठी विजय तेंडुलकर मानक महान व्यक्ती माझे फक्त का (का) होते.
माझी आणि त्यांची ओळख साधारण २००३ पासून. माझे बाबा ना.ग.बोडस एक हौशी नाटककार. त्यांच्या निर्वाणानंतर मला एक ई-मेल आला. बाबांची आणि का (का)ची मैत्री आणि एक न विसरणारं वाक्य.

त्यानंतर आमचा मेल प्रवास सुरू झाला. मी एक दिवस त्यांना माझी कविता पाठवली आणि त्यांच्या अभिप्रायाची अपेक्षा केली. त्यांचं उत्तर आलं,``लिहीत राहा''. मी गोंधळात पडले. ``लिहीत राहा'' याचे दोन अभिप्राय शक्य होते. त्यांना माझं लिहिणं आवडलं होतं. आणि मी अजून लिहावं अशी त्यांची इच्छा होती. किंवा माझी कविता हवी तितकी चांगली नव्हती म्हणूल ``लिहित राहा'. त्यात सुधारणा करण्याची गरज होती. बरेच दिवस मी त्या ``लिहित राहा'वर विचार करत राहिले. पण काहीच उमजेना. तेव्हा मी माझी शंका विचारायला परत एक मेल पाठवला. त्याचं उत्तर.. `थहे ींेश्रव र्ूेी? ख रा रपू र्रीींहेीळींू ेप ेशिींीू?` आणि मला वाटलं माझंच चुकलं. विजय तेंडुलकर नामक इतक्या मोठ्या व्यक्तिशी माझं इतक्या सलगीनं वागणं चुकलेलं होतं. निराशा आणि भीती या भावनांनी मी त्यांना मेल पाठवणं बंद केलं. बरेच दिवस (जवळ जवळ महिना) काहीच कॉन्टॅक्ट नव्हता. आणि एक दिवस मला हे मिळालं.

``मन एक गूढ शक्ती आहे. ती ज्याची त्यालाच कळत नाही आणि कधीतरी तीच शक्ती थक्क करून सोडते.'' का(का)च्या म्हणण्याचा अर्थ मला कधीच कळला नव्हता. पण आज मला तो समजतो. काकांबरोबरच्या माझ्या नात्याबद्दल मी नेहमीच संभ्रमात होते. मी नकळत आमच्या नात्यातलं अंतर वाढवत होते. पण का(कां)नी तसं होऊ दिलं नाही. अतिशय निर्मळ आणि पारदर्शी असं त्यांचं माझ्याशी वागणं होतं. त्यांनी मला नकारात्मक घटनासुद्धा झेीळींर्ळींश कशा करायच्या हेच शिकवलं.
त्यानंतर मात्र मी माझ्या आयुष्यातल्या प्रत्येक छोट्या-मोठ्या घटना त्यांना सांगायला लागले आणि तेही तितक्याच आत्मीयतेने मला सल्ला देत. आयुष्याबद्दलच्या निराशाजनक विचारांना कसं डावलायचं, कसं सामोरं जायचं आणि उत्साहाने समाधानकारक आयुष्य कसं जगायचं हे मी त्यांच्याकडूनच आणि त्यांच्यामुळेच शिकले.
मी माझं घर ीशपर्पेींरींश केलं होतं. मी एकटी होते. आईबाबांची आठवण येत होती. का(कां)ना फोन केला . ``हॅलो, का(का)'' एवढं म्हटलं आणि मी एक शब्दही बोलू शकले नाही. मला रडूच फुटलं. कितीतरी वेळ मी रडतच होते. पलीकडे का(का) नि:स्तब्ध होते. माझ्या रडण्याचा भर जेव्हा ओसरला तेव्हा प्रेमळ शब्द आले, `` रेवा, तू माझ्याकडे ये. मी तुझी वाट पाहतोय.'' त्यांच्या शब्दांनी मला आधार मिळाला. सुरक्षिततेचा आधार वाटला.
२००७पर्यंत मी त्यांना एक दोनदाच भेटले होते. त्यानंतर मी पुण्यात आले. माझ्या अभ्यासात गुंतुनही गेले. पण त्यांना मेल पाठवणं काही थांबलं नाही. त्यांच्याकडून उत्तरास कधीच उशीर झाला नसल्याने जेव्हा बरेच दिवस त्यांचे उत्तर आले नाही, मला काळजी वाटायला लागली. मी त्यांना फोन केला. पण नो रिप्लाय! मी जास्तच काळजीत पडले. कुठूनही, कसंही त्यंाच्याबद्दल कळावं असं वाटत होतं. आणि विद्याताइंर्च्या ह्या मेलनं मी गोंधळात पडले.

दुसऱ्या दिवशी जेव्हा मी हॉस्पिटलमध्ये गेले, तेव्हा विद्याताइंर्नी मला त्यांच्या आजाराबद्दल कल्पना दिली. मी आत गेले. बेडवरचे का(का) प्रसन्नपणे हसले. आणि किती तरी वेळ माझ्या पाठीवरून हात फिरवत राहिले. बोलता येत नसल्याने, जवळच असलेले नोटपॅड आणि पेन मागितले आणि त्याच्यावर लिहिलं,``कशी आहेस? काळजी करू नकोस. मी लवकरच बरा होईन'' जीवनाला सकारात्मक सामोरं जाणं म्हणजे हेच नाही का?
मी जवळजवळ रोज त्यांना भेटायला जायचे. संध्याकाळी ते बाहेर येऊन बसायचे. नोटपॅड आणि पेन यांनीच नाटक, साहित्य, राजकारण अशा विविध विषयांवर त्यांच्या चर्चा रंगायच्या. ते बघत असताना मला त्यांचा एक मेल सहज आठवून गेला.

ज्यादिवशी त्यांच्या घशातली ट्यूब काढली, तेव्हा तब्बल तीन वर्षांनी मी त्यांचा आवाज ऐकला. मला वाटलं,``चैतन्य ते हेच. त्यांच्याबरोबरचा प्रत्येक क्षण माझ्याकरता न विसरणारा आहे.''
आणि ह्या सगळयात मला कधीही आमच्या नात्याला नाव देण्याची गरज आढळली नव्हती. कुणीतरी मला हाच प्रश्न आत्ता विचारत होतं. माझे मार्गदर्शक, गुरू, माझी शक्ती, माझे का(का) हे सर्व मी एका नात्यात कसे बघणार होते? मी विजय तेंडुलकरांची कोण, हे मला कधीच कळालं नव्हतं. ते कळून घेण्याचा मी कधी प्रयत्नही केला नव्हता. मला प्रश्न पडला. त्यांच्या प्रश्नाचं उत्तर शोधत असतानाच कोणीतरी मागून म्हणालं, ``ही तेंडुलकरांची सर्वात लहान मैत्रीण''.
