`स्वाती शहा' ही आमच्या सखी मंडळातली आणि `मिळून साऱ्याजणी'च्या परिवारातली आमची सख्खी मैत्रीण. वयाने तशी आमच्या सगळयांपेक्षा लहान. उत्साही आणि संवेदनशील कवयित्री.
मंडळाच्या कोणत्याही मेळाव्याच्या वेळी स्वत:च्या गाडीतून पाहुण्यांची, सभासदांची ने-आण करणारी. सखी मंडळाच्या बैठकींसाठी नवऱ्याच्या ऑफिसच्या बाजूच्या खोलीत आनंदाने आणि निरपेक्षपणे जागा करून देणारी मंडळाची कार्यकर्ती. पण ...
पण बरोबर दोन वर्षांपूर्वी स्वातीच्या आणि तिच्या पतीच्या आयुष्यात अचानक एक महाभयानक वीज कोसळली. अचानक आणि अकस्मात ! तिचा धक्का इतका प्रचंड होता की, ही दोन्ही माणसे उन्मळून पडतात की काय अशी अवस्था होती. असं काय झालं ?
जुलै २००६. पुण्यातील एका कर्तृत्ववान जोडप्याचा स्वाती आणि अशोक शहा यांचा तितकाच कर्तृत्ववान मुलगा, लहान वयात आर्किटेक्ट इंटिरिअरच्या आपल्या व्यवसायात उत्तम यश मिळवत असताना सामाजिकतेचंही तितकंच भान असणारा, आईवडिलांचा, नातेवाईकांचा, सहकाऱ्यांचा सर्वांचा लाडका `आस्वाद' वयाच्या अवघ्या २३व्या वर्षी मृत्यूमुखी पडला. आणि त्याचं घरदार शोकाकूल झालं. निदान ठरलं... कार्डिअॅक अरेस्ट...!!
कोणताही आजार नसताना, उत्तम खेळाडू असणारा, आरोग्यवान असा हा मुलगा. आयुष्यातल्या एका सर्वोच्च आनंदाच्या क्षणी मम्मी-मम्मी म्हणत बसल्या जागेवर कोसळतो. वडिलांच्या वाढदिवसासाठी त्यांना स्वत:च्या मिळकतीतून आणलेल्या गाडीच्या पेढ्यांचा पुडा हातातून निसटून पेढे घरंगळतात आणि सारंच संपतं.
त्यानंतर त्याच्या आईवडिलांसाठी राहतं ते भीषण वास्तव, पुत्राच्या कायमच्या वियोगाच्या दु:खाचं...
जगात अनेक दुर्दैवी मातापित्यांवर असा प्रसंग ओढवल्याची उदाहरणं आहेत. पण या मुलाचे आईवडील स्वाती आणि अशोक शहा यांनी दु:खाच्या खोल गर्तेत कोसळल्यावर शोकाचे कढ आवरत असताना एक वेगळाच विचार केला.
त्याच्या आईनं स्वातीनं पहिली गोष्ट केली, त्याच्या मृत्यूनंतर काही मिनिटातच स्वत:च्या हातानं त्याच्या नेत्रदानाचा अर्ज लिहिला.
आणि नंतर शोकमग्न अवस्थेत असताना काही दिवसांनी, दु:खातून बाहेर पडण्याचा मार्ग म्हणून मुलाच्या आठवणींना एका वेगळया पद्धतीने चिरंतन रूप देण्याचा निश्चय केला.
आप्त, मित्रपरिवार, व्यवसायातले सहकारी अशा सगळयांना, आस्वादच्या त्यांच्याजवळ असलेल्या आठवणी पाठवण्याचे आवाहन केले. त्या सर्वांनीही भरभरून प्रतिसाद दिला. आणि त्यातूनच साकारला `आस्वाद - एक अनुभूती' हा स्मृतिकोष !

आस्वाद गेल्यावर दोन-तीन महिन्यातच त्याच्या
कामगारांवर बेकारीची वेळ येऊ नये म्हणून त्याचा व्यवसाय चालू ठेवण्याचा निर्णय घेणारी त्याची आई स्वाती - या पुस्तकातील आपल्या मनोगतात म्हणते, ``त्याच्या आठवणी हेच जीवन झालेल्या आमच्या उभयतांच्या जगण्याला हा स्मृतिकोष एक नवा अर्थ देईल. देव करो, हा प्रसंग कोणत्याच माता-पित्यांवर न येवो, पण ज्यांच्यावर आला असेल, त्यांनी आपल्या अपत्याच्या सुखद आठवणींच्या आधारावर उर्वरित आयुष्याला सामोरं जावं ही यामागची भावना आहे.''
