प्रिय वाचक,
अलीकडे माझा प्रवास, फिरणं जरा कमी होत चाललं आहे. कुठल्या शिबिराविषयी, परिषदेविषयी, व्याख्यानाविषयी ऐकलं की मनात आजही लगेचच उत्सुकता वाटते, उत्साह वाटतो पण त्या प्रवासाचं आणि कार्यक्रमाचं वेळापत्रक ठरवायला लागलं की एवढं सगळं झेपेल का असा प्रश्न मनात येतोच. मनाच्या उत्साहाला शरीराची ताकद साथ देत नाही. तरीपण `मूळ स्वभाव जाईना' असं होतंच. आत्ताच मी जून महिन्यात पंढरपूरला आणि मुंबईला जाऊन आले आणि ते बरंही झालं.
दत्ताभाऊ सावळे हे नाव परिवर्तनाच्या चळवळीतल्या अनेकांना ओळखीचं आहे. वसंतराव पळशीकर आणि भाऊ, अनेक चळवळया, धडपड्या गटांना या दोघांचा संपर्क ठेवण्याचं महत्त्व माहीत आहे. भाऊ राजस्थानात, झारखंडात, हिमाचलात, आसामात, बिहारात अशा महाराष्ट्नपलीकडच्या कितीतरी अमराठी राज्यातल्या कार्यकर्त्या स्त्रीपुरुषांचे सल्लामसलतगार, मार्गदर्शक झाले आहेत. विशेषत: कार्यकर्त्यांना, इतरांना बोलतं करण्याचं, शिकण्याशिकवण्याचं प्रशिक्षण देण्यासाठी, सगळयांनाच भाऊ `आपले' वाटतात. या भाऊंची पंच्याहत्तरी नेहमीच्या समारंभाप्रमाणे साजरी न करता, वेगळया प्रकारानं साजरी करण्याचं, राजन् इंदुलकर आणि काही कार्यकर्त्यांनी ठरवलं. त्यात भाऊंचे नातेवाईक तर होतेच पण त्यापलीकडे अनेक कार्यकर्ते - (पार झारखंड, बंगाल, उत्तर प्रदेश अशा ठिकाणाहून, स्वखर्चानं आले !) आणि भाऊंना गुरू मानणाऱ्या इतर व्यक्तीही सहभागी झाल्या. दोन दिवस आजच्या चळवळींसमोर उभ्या ठाकलेल्या अडचणींची, आव्हानांची गंभीर चर्चा झाली. भाऊंशी असलेलं आपलं नातं कृतज्ञतापूर्वक उलगडून दाखवणारी अनुभवकथनं झाली, भाऊ संगीताचे शौकीन म्हणून सतारवादन आणि शास्त्रीय संगीताची छोटी मैफल झाली. मुख्य म्हणजे जमलेले सगळे भाऊंना आणि एकमेकांना भेटले ! या सगळयात सहभागी झाल्यामुळे माझी `पंढरीची वारी' फारच मोलाची ठरली! इथे आवर्जून नमूद करावंसं वाटतं की वर्षानुवर्ष मी खर्चिक लग्नांवर टीका करते आहे आणि सांगते आहे की लग्न साधं आणि छोटं करू या. `आपल्या' माणसांना भेटण्याचे `असे' पर्यायी कार्यक्रम शोधू या. त्यात कधी पुस्तक प्रकाशन असेल, कधी कामाचा गौरव असेल, कधी एखाद्या विशेष कामगिरीबद्दलचं कौतुक असेल तर कधी अशा कोणत्याही विशेष कारणाऐवजी `आपल्या माणसांना भेटण्याची इच्छा' हेच एक कारण असेल. `असल्या' लेखनामुळे माझ्यावर माझे काही मित्रमैत्रिणी रागावतातही ! असो.
मुंबईत, महाराष्ट्न् राज्य साहित्यसंस्कृती मंडळाच्या वतीने केशवसुतांसारख्या युगप्रवर्तक कवीच्या हस्ताक्षरातल्या कवितांचा संग्रह प्रकाशित करणारा कार्यक्रम झाला आणि त्याचवेळी या मंडळाच्या वतीने गुरू पार्वतीकुमार यांना भरतनाट्यम् या नृत्यक्षेत्रातल्या त्यांच्या विशेष योगदानाबद्दल गौरववृत्ती देण्यात आली. या कार्यक्रमातला सहभागही एक आनंदाचा अनुभव होता.
अशा वेगवेगळया कारणानं मी प्रवास करते, तिथे प्रसंगातून, माणसांच्या भेटीतून माझं एक प्रकारचं `वाचन' होतं हे काहीसं खरं आहे. तरीपण, पुस्तकांमधलं वाचून मिळणारं ज्ञान मिळवण्यात मी खूप कमी पडते याची मला जाणीव आहे. पण निदान `केल्याने देशाटन' या उक्तीनुसार, मला सतत प्रत्यक्षात, वेगळं आणि विचार करायला लावणारं असं काहीतरी भेटतं हेही खरं! तेवढीच ज्ञानात भर आणि दृष्टिकोनाचा विस्तार !
आत्ताचाच साधा पुणे-मुंबई आगगाडीचा प्रवास. सेकंडक्लासचा डबा. आरक्षित जागांवर प्रवासी बसत होते. आरक्षण करून न आलेल्या प्रवाशांच्या जागेवर जागा शोधणारे काही `टेकत' होते. एवढ्यात शिवाजीनगरला एक बाई दोन मुलांसह चढली. माझ्याच पलीकडच्या रिकाम्या जागेवर मंडळी बसली. १०/१५ मिनिटं गेली असतील. त्या बाईनं मोठ्या मुलीला जवळ घेऊन कानात काही सांगितलं. ती १०/११ वर्षांची मुलगी आपल्या धाकट्या भावाला घेऊन स्वच्छतागृहाकडे गेली. थोड्याच वेळात तिकिटं तपासणीसाठी टी.सी. आला. ती बाई सारखी वळूनवळून स्वच्छतागृहाकडे बघत होती. मला वाटलं, पोरांच्या काळजीनं बघत असेल. टी.सी.नं तिला तिकिट दाखवायला सांगितलं. तिनं दाखवलं. ती माझ्या पलीकडच्या रांगेत होती. त्यामुळे मला नीटपणे त्यांच्यातला संवाद कळला नाही. पण तिचं आरक्षण नसताना ती या डब्यात बसली होती हे गैर असल्याचं टी.सी. म्हणाला असावा. तिनं लगेचच उतरायचं असल्याचं सांगितलं असावं. टी.सी. पुढे सरकला. तिने स्वच्छतागृहाकडे नजर टाकत पुन्हा `थांब' सांगणारे हावभाव केले. टी.सी. आणखी पुढे गेल्यावर, पुन्हा स्वच्छतागृहाकडे बघून तिने मुलांना `या' अशी खूण केली. दोघं आली, जागेवर बसली. बसताना मुलीच्या चेहऱ्यावर हसू होतं. सांगितल्यानुसार, टी.सी. आला तेव्हा स्वच्छतागृहात गेल्यामुळे, टी.सी.ला गंडवणं जमल्याचा भाव तिच्या चेहऱ्यावर दिसत होता. त्या बाईकडे बघता बघता माझं डोकं हा सारा तर्क लढवत, जणू गोष्ट रचत होतं ! त्या दिवशी प्रथमच पाहिलं की एकदम चार स्त्री टी.सींचा एक गट, उलट्या दिशेने पुन्हा तिकिटं तपासायला आला. आमच्यापाशी आल्यावर त्यांनी काहींनाच तिकिटं दाखवायला सांगितलं. त्यात ती बाई होती. तिच्याजवळ तिचं स्वत:चं एक व मुलीचं अर्ध अशी तिकिटं होती. मुलाच्या तिकिटाबाबत विचारलं तेव्हा बाईनं मुलाचं वय साडेतीन सांगितलं! उघडच दिसत होतं की मुलगा सहासात वर्षांचा असावा. टी.सी.ने पटकन मुलाला विचारलं, `कितवीत आहेस' मुलानं उत्तर दिलं, `दुसरीत'! मुलाला पुरेसं पढवलं नसावं ! मग टी.सी. आणि ती बाई यांच्यात युक्तिवाद सुरू झाला. बाईचा भावनिक बहाणा करून झाला. वर म्हणाली, `माझा काही प्रॉब्लेम नाही. म्हणत असाल तर पैसे भरते मुलाचे.' स्त्री टी.सी. समजदार आणि जबाबदार वाटली. सगळयांसमोर चर्चा करण्याऐवजी तिनं त्या बाईला बाजूला नेलं. पैसे घेतले. पावती दिली ! बाई परत जागेवर येऊन बसली, तेव्हा शेजारच्या प्रवाशानं, `काय झालं' विचारलं. त्यावर ही बाई म्हणते, `तिकिटं घेताना मी बघितलं नाही ना ! नजरचुकीनं झालं असं!' मी धन्य झाले. आपल्या मुलाचं वय सात असताना, टी.सीला साडेतीन सांगणारी ही बाई. शेजारच्या प्रवाशाला भलतंच उत्तर देत होती.
या प्रसंगातली व्यक्ती महत्त्वाची. ती बाई की पुरुष महत्त्वाचं नाही. कुणीही बेजबाबदार माणूस असं वागू शकतं. मला तिच्या मुलांची काळजी वाटली. आईनं केलेली फसवणूक, बहाणा याचं गांभीर्य न कळणाऱ्या त्या मुलीला, आईच्या युक्तीचं, हुशारीचं कौतुक वाटलं असावं, असं तिच्या चेहऱ्यावरचं हसू मला सांगत होतं ! शिवाय त्या बाईनं नंतर एकच कॉफी मागवली. मी गरम होती म्हणून त्या मोठ्या मुलीनं फुंकर घालून, गार करून त्या भावाला दिली. मुलीला कॉफी नको होती की नसली तरी चालते, पण भावाची काळजी घ्यायला हवी असं शिकवलं होतं ? आपापल्या तर्काला आणि निरीक्षणाला भरपूर वाव आहे.
प्रवासात अशी माणसांच्या मनाची, विचार करण्याची कितीतरी रूपं दाखवणारे प्रसंग घडतात. अनेकदा त्यात एखाद्या सुंदर कथेचं बीज असल्याचं मला जाणवतं. मी असा अनुभव सांगू/लिहू शकले तरी त्याची कथा बनवण्याचा विचार माझ्या मनात येत नाही. एकेकाळी मीही कथा लिहिल्या. पण आपल्या कथा, साहित्यात काही मोलाची भर घालत नाहीत हे एका टप्प्यावर माझ्या लक्षात आलं आणि मी कथा लिहायची थांबले. त्यामुळे `नकोशा' कथांच्या ओझ्यातून मराठी साहित्यसृष्टी बचावली एवढंच नाही, तर आपल्या मर्यादा कळल्यामुळेच माझं आकलनाचं बळ वाढलं.
संपादक म्हणून अनेकांचं, अनेक प्रकारचं साहित्य मी गेली चाळीस वर्ष वाचत आले आहे. माझ्या लेखनाबाबतचं माझं आकलन, त्यातल्या मर्यादा आणि सामर्थ्य समजल्यामुळेच, हळूहळू वाढत गेलं. नव्यानं लेखन करणाऱ्यांना मला हेच सांगायचं आहे की आपलं लेखन आपण कितीही प्रामाणिकपणे, मेहनत घेऊन केलं किंवा तो खुद्द स्वत:चा अनुभव किंवा बघितलेली सत्यकथा असली तरी साहित्य म्हणून ते लेखन दर्जेदार असेलच असे नाही. लेखनासाठी संवेदनशील मन हवं तसंच विचार करणारंही मन हवं. लेखन कशासाठी करावंसं वाटलं ? हौस म्हणून ? प्रसिद्धी हवीशी वाटली म्हणून ? त्यामुळे नाव आणि मानमान्यता मिळते म्हणून ? कशासाठी हे सारं ? हे स्वत:ला निक्षून विचारायला हवं.
एरव्ही हौस म्हणून लिहावंही. स्वत:चं ते वाचावंही. पण त्याबरोबरच स्वत:च्या लेखनापलीकडचं गाजलेलं साहित्यही वाचावं. त्यातली भाषा, मांडणी, जीवनविषयक दृष्टिकोन, मानवी नाती, व्यापक जगाचं दर्शन यांचा वेध घ्यावा. लेखन करणं सोपं असेल पण केलेलं लेखन जर खऱ्या अर्थानं साहित्यात मोलाची भर घालण्याएवढं सकस ठरायचं असेल तर ती गोष्ट केवळ हौसेची न राहता ध्यासाची व्हायला हवी. सहज म्हणून सुचवावंसं वाटतं की महेश एलकुंचवारांचं `मौनराग' हे पुस्तक आणि त्यातला विशेषत:, `राग ललित' हा लेख लिहू इच्छिणाऱ्यांनी जरूर वाचावा. किंवा डॉ. आ. ह. साळुंखे यांचं इत्यादीच्या मे ०८ अंकात प्रसिद्ध झालेलं अंजनगाव सुर्जी, जि. अमरावती इथे १६-१७ फेब्रुवारी रोजी झालेले प्रतिभावंतांचं सा. संमेलन या परिषदेतलं भाषणही या संदर्भात आवर्जून वाचण्यासारखं आहे. लेखनामागचं गांभीर्य, जीवनाची वेध घेऊ बघणारी सखोल दृष्टी असल्याशिवाय लेखन समृद्ध होणं कठीण आहे. म्हणूनच लिहिणाऱ्यांनी, लिहू इच्छिणाऱ्यांनी लिहिण्यापूर्वी/लिहून झाल्यावरही हे लेखन वाचावं. मुख्य म्हणजे लेखनाला विचारांचा पाया हवा. नाहीतर इमारत उभी कशी राहील आणि टिकेल तरी कशी ?
