दि. १९ सप्टेंबर १९९६ पासून मी स्वत:ला देशातील अशिक्षित लोकांच्या सेवेसाठी सुपूर्त केले. या कामात मला प्रथम मार्गदर्शन मिळालं प्रा. इंदिरा आठवले यांचं. आठवले मॅडम यांनी जेलरोड परिसरात साक्षरता अभियानाचे काम सुरू केले. या अभियानाचे दोन दिवसांचे प्रशिक्षण घेऊन मी साक्षरतेचे वर्ग सुरू केले. आपल्या देशातील असंख्य लोक निरक्षर आहेत. सावित्रीबाई फुले यांचा आदर्श डोळयांसमोर ठेवून ज्ञानाची ज्योत अशीच पुढे तेवत ठेवण्याचा मनाशी संकल्प केला.
म. न. पा. शाळा क्रमांक ७ जेलरोड, नासिक रोड येथे मी पहिले पाऊल निरक्षरांना साक्षर करण्यासाठी टाकले आणि प्रत्यक्ष अनुभवले, की आपल्या सभोवतालच्या परिसरातील लोक शिक्षणापासून किती वंचित आहेत. ग्रामीण, आदिवासी भागातील स्त्रिया अधिक प्रमाणात निरक्षर आहेत, म्हणून मी माझ्या परिसरातील २५ महिलांचा (निरक्षर) वर्ग सुरू केला. त्यातील काही महिला पोलीस कर्मचाऱ्यांच्या पत्नीही होत्या. त्यांचे व्यवस्थित, नीटनेटके राहणीमान बघून माझा विश्वासच बसत नव्हता की या महिला निरक्षर असतील. त्या म्हणायच्या 'या वयात शिकून काय करायचं, आम्हांला काय नोकरी लागणार काय?' 'आमच्या गवऱ्या मशनात गेल्यात', असे साक्षर झालेल्या ७० वर्षांच्या कलाबाई चंद्रमोरे म्हणायच्या आणि दुसऱ्या साक्षर झालेल्या ६० वर्षांच्या आजी शांताबाई गायकवाड यांना तर सहा महिन्यांत साक्षर झाल्याचे प्रमाणपत्र मिळाले. शिक्षणाला वयाचे बंधन नसते, हे त्यांनी दाखवून दिले आणि नंतर शासकीय पद्धतीने या कामाचा पहिला टप्पा संपला.
नंतर कला जत्थ्यात, पथनाट्य यात भाग घेऊन महत्त्वाच्या भूमिका केल्या. गाणे, सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रम, महिला मेळावे, आरोग्य शिबिर, साक्षरता फेऱ्या घेतल्या तसेच साक्षर होणाऱ्या महिलांची आकाशवाणीवर मुलाखत, श्रमिक विद्यापीठाचे चित्रीकरण, ध्वनीफित करण्यात आली.
माझे सहकारी माधव वाघ हे कारागृहात एम. एस. डब्ल्यू.चे काम करत होते. त्यांनी जेलरसाहेबांची परवानगी घेऊन जेलमधील बंदिवान निरक्षर स्त्रियांना साक्षर करण्याची संधी मिळवून दिली. सेंट्न्ल जेल, नाशिक रोड येथे बंदिवान स्त्रियांना साक्षर करण्याचे काम ९८ ऑक्टोबरपासून सुरू केले, तेव्हा प्रथम कारागृहातील स्त्रियांशी संपर्क साधताना भीती वाटली; तरी न घाबरता त्यांना समजावून घेण्याचा मी प्रयत्न केला. त्यांनीही प्रतिकार न करता साक्षरतेचे धडे सुरू केले.
दरवर्षी २६ जानेवारीला 'मायको एम्प्लॉइज फोरम' या संस्थेमार्फत सर्वस्तरीय समाजकार्य करणाऱ्या पाच समाजसेवकांचा गौरव करण्यात येतो. दि. २६-१-९९ ला संस्थेच्या आठव्या वर्धापनदिनी साक्षरता अभियानाद्वारे, तुरुंगातील महिला कैद्यांना साक्षर केल्याने, प्रमुख अतिथी डॉ. रावसाहेब कसबे व संजय देशपांडे यांच्या हस्ते मला स्मृतिचिन्ह, प्रमाणपत्र, शाल-श्रीफळ मिळाले.
यानंतर माझे लक्ष वळले ते रेल्वेस्टेशनवरील निरक्षर, गरीब मुलांकडे. ते स्टेशनवर चहा विकतात, बूट पॉलिश करतात आणि सर्वांत दयनीय अवस्था न बघण्यासारखी ती म्हणजे रेल्वेगाडीतील प्रवाशांसमोर अंगातील शर्ट काढून गाडीत झाडू मारणे आणि प्रवाशांकडे पैसे मागणे. त्यांनाही शिक्षणाचे महत्त्व समजावे यासाठी काही दिवस त्या मुलांमध्ये जाऊन साक्षरतेचे वर्ग चालविले.
भा. ज्ञा. विज्ञान समितीमार्फत जनआरोग्य या संस्थेत सामील झाले. साक्षरता फेरी, जनवाचन आंदोलन, आरोग्यावरील स्लाईड-शो, अंधश्रद्धा, विविध गाणी, या सारखे कार्यक्रम लोकांना एकत्र जमवून करून दाखवले; आणि आरोग्याचे महत्त्व पटवून दिले. हे करत असताना काही चांगले तर काही वाईट अनुभव आले. २००१ मध्ये सरकारने सर्वांना आरोग्य सुविधा मोफत देण्यात येतील असे सांगितले. त्यासाठी कोलकाता येथे अनेक संघटना एकत्रित आल्या होत्या. त्यात आमची ही संघटना भा. ज्ञा. वि. समिती सहभागी होती. मीसुद्धा त्यात होते. मी सतत घराबाहेर राहत असे, कारण मला नेहमी वाटत असे सर्वसामान्य मरण्यापेक्षा काहीतरी चांगले काम करूनच मरावे आणि स्वत:ला या क्षेत्रात वाहून घेतले.
हे काम करत असतानाच मुंबईच्या जागर ग्रुपशी संपर्क आला. 'जागर' ग्रुपमधील भीमराव गमरे यांच्याशी ओळख झाली. मला स्वत:ला हृदयविकाराचा आजार होता. त्यांच्या घरी गेले असता त्यांचे मित्र तानाजी सपकाळ, त्यांचा भाऊ शिवाजी सपकाळ यांच्याशी परिचय झाला. घरची परिस्थिती बेताचीच, वडील पेन्शनर, कुटुंब मोठे. तेव्हा मायको फोरम संस्थेचा आधार घेण्याचे ठरविले आणि त्यांच्याकडे गेले आणि ऑपरेशन करण्याचा विचार सांगितला. लगेचच माझ्या उपचारासाठी डॉक्टरांकडे स्वत: घेऊन गेले. उषा तुमचीच नाही तर ती आमचीही आहे. लोकांना तिची गरज आहे. त्यासाठी तिचे ऑपरेशन करण्यासाठी मी मुंबईला नेत आहे. ऑपरेशनमधून बरी झाले आणि आनंदाची बातमी मिळाली. ती अशी, की इनरव्हीलक्लबतर्फे सामाजिक क्षेत्रात चांगले काम केल्याबद्दल पुरस्कार मिळणार आहे आणि जून ०३ ला विद्या फडके यांच्या हस्ते पुरस्कार मिळाला. आता याही पुढे सामाजिक क्षेत्रात तळागाळात जाऊन काम करण्याची फार इच्छा आहे; पण ती संधी लाभली पाहिजे. या समाजकार्यास मी मला सुपूर्त केले आहे. हे माझे कार्य असेच सतत पुढे चालू राहो, कितीही अडचण, संकटे आली तरी मागे पाऊल टाकणार नाही यासाठी मला सर्व सहकार्यांची तसेच समाजाचीही अत्यंत गरज आहे. माझ्या सर्व कार्यकर्त्यांची आणि मदतीचा हात देणाऱ्या संघटनांची मी फार ऋणी आहे.
