पण अलीकडेच ज्येष्ठ दिग्दर्शिका विजया मेहता यांना प्रभाकर पणशीकर महाराष्ट्न् राज्य जीवन गौरव पुरस्कारानं सन्मानित करण्याची बातमी प्रसिद्ध झाली आणि सरकार कधीकधी संवेदनशीलही असतं, याची जाणीव झाली. पुरस्काराचं स्वरूप मानचिन्ह आणि एक लाख रुपये असं.
पुरस्कारमूर्तींचे सत्कार आणि सन्मान प्रदानाचा समारंभ रवींद्र नाट्य मंदीर, प्रभादेवी येथे साजरा झाला. वेळ होती सायंकाळी साडेसात. नाट्यमंदीर अपेक्षेनुसार ओसंडून वाहत होतं. सन्मानपात्र कलाकारावरच्या रसिकांच्या प्रेमाची ती पावतीच होती.
रंगमंचावर फुलांची नेटकी आरास, विजयाबाइंर्चं एक मोठ्ठं छायाचित्र, बाजूला नाटकातल्या भूमिकांची छायाचित्रं, एका कोपऱ्यात दृश्यं दाखवण्यासाठी पडदा, पडद्याच्या तिरक्या अंगाला माईक.
सुरुवात झाली नांदीनं. त्यानंतर नासिरुद्दीन शहा, नीना कुलकर्णी आणि अंबरीश मिश्र या तिघांनी बाइंर्विषयीच्या आपल्या भावना व्यक्त केल्या. त्यावेळी पाठीमागे पडद्यावर बाइंर्च्या विविध प्रतिमा तरळत होत्या.
नसिरुद्दीन आणि नीना यांनी बाइंर्च्या दिग्दर्शनाबद्दल आपले अनुभव सांगितले तर अंबरीश मिश्र यांनी बाइंर्मधल्या प्रतिभेचा नेमक्या शब्दात वेध घेऊन विवेचन केलं. मराठी नाटकाच्या इतिहासात गडकरी, दारव्हेकर असे मास्तर होऊन गेले पण विजयाबाई या एकमेव `बाई'.
सांस्कृतिक मंत्री अशोक चव्हाण आणि अर्थमंत्री जयंत पाटील यांनी त्यांच्या भाषणातून राजकीय नेत्यामधल्या सुसंस्कृत व्यक्तीचं दर्शन घडवलं. शासन मराठी नाटक, सिनेमांसाठी काय काय करतंय, याची माहिती दिली.
प्रभाकर पणशीकर यांनी भाषणाला सुरुवात केली ती आवेशातच, `कलाकार वृद्ध झाल्यावर पुरस्कार मिळतात. तेव्हा अशा एकदम ४/५ वयस्कर कलाकारांना एकाच वर्षी पुरस्कार द्यावेत' असं त्यांनी ठासून सांगितलं.
सत्कारानंतर विजया मेहता बोलायला उभ्या राहिल्या. रसिक प्रेक्षक याच क्षणाची वाट बघत होते.

``नाटकातून भूमिका करताना त्या त्या भूमिकेतलं आयुष्य मी जगले. हमिदाबाईची कोठी, संध्याछाया, बॅरिस्टर. त्या विचारांनी मला समृद्ध केलं. नाटकानं मला सत्य शिकवलं. आम्ही नाटकात नेपथ्य उभारतो.... दरवाजाची चौकट, पडदा हे घराचे आभास, म्हणजे खोटं....भूमिका.... तुम्हाला हे सारं खोटं आहे हे ठाऊक असूनही तुम्ही दाद देता. नाटककार लिहितो, दिग्दर्शक ते मांडतो त्या सगळयाचा आधार खोटेपणा. पण त्यात एक सत्य असतं, ते मी तुम्हाला सांगते.
जयवंत दळवी या नाटककाराने `संध्याछाया'मधून मला नानी व माधव वाटवे यांना नाना म्हणून प्रसिद्धी दिली. एकदा औरंगाबादला `संध्याछाया'चा प्रयोग झाल्यावर एक तरूण जोडपं भेटायला आलं. त्यांना माझ्या पाया पडायचं होतं, का? विचारल्यावर ती तरूण बाई म्हणाली, ``यांची आई खेड्यात एकटी राहते. गेली तीन वर्षे हे भेटायला जायचं म्हणत होते, पण जाणं होत नव्हतं. नाटक पाहिल्यावर म्हणाले, ``उद्या सकाळच्याच एस.टी.नं जातो''
मी म्हणते ते हे सत्य !''
स्नेहीजन भारावून गेले होते. पुरस्काराविषयी त्या म्हणाल्या, ``माझी चार वर्षाची नात शाळेतून आली आणि आपल्या पालथ्या हातावरचा स्टार दाखवत म्हणाली, ``बघ मी स्पोर्टस्मध्ये पहिली आले. मला स्टार मिळाला.'' मला आज नेमकं हेच वाटतंय.'' विजयाबाई थांबल्या. टाळया सुरूच राहिल्या.
