अॅलिफियाच्या वाट्याला आयुष्यात अनेक अडचणी आल्या, अनेक अभाव आले, पण त्यांनी खचून न जाण्याची शिकवण तिला तिच्या घरातूनच मिळाली. तिच्या वडिलांच्या वाट्याला आयुष्यात अंधत्वाचं दान पडलं होतं. आई घरातील एकटी कमावती माणूस होती, पण त्या दोघांनी, तिच्या आजीने सर्वांनीच आपल्या वागणुकीतून धीराने आयुष्याला पेलण्याचं, नेहमी सकारात्मक विचाराने आलेल्या प्रसंगाला तोलण्याचं उदाहरण घालून दिलं होतं. आई, वडील, आजी, भावंडं यांच्यात लहानपणापासून मनाने गुंतलेली अॅलिफियाही मजेत शाळेत जात होती. मध्यमवर्गीय कुटुंबातील ही मुलगी आयुष्यात कोणीतरी विशेष बनण्याची स्वप्नं पाहात होती. सेंट अॅन्स हायस्कूलमधलं शिक्षण पूर्ण झालं. वाडिया कॉलेजमधील दोन वर्षं पूर्ण झाली. बारावीनंतर पुढे काय? हा प्रश्न तिच्याही समोर होता. पालकांनी अमुकच करिअर निवड अशी कोणतीही सक्ती केली नाही. दबाव आणला नाही, तरी तिला याची जाणीव करून दिली की तिने केवळ तात्कालिक समाधान मिळेल अशा व्यवसायाचा विचार करू नये. तिला त्यात आयुष्यभर रस वाटला पाहिजे. सतत काहीतरी करायची उमेद वाटली पाहिजे.
अॅलिफियाला निर्णय घेणं सोपं नव्हतं. पण वयाच्या सोळाव्या वर्षीही अॅलिफियाजवळ एक शहाणी समज होती. ती निरनिराळया करिअर गाइडन्स सेमिनार्सना गेली. निरनिराळया व्यक्तींना भेटली. त्यात डॉक्टर्स, इंजिनिअर्स, बॉटनिस्टस्, शास्त्रज्ञ, अकाऊंटंट, शिक्षक, वकील असे विविध व्यावसायिक होते. ती चर्चा करून समजून घेत होती. ह्या तिच्या प्रयत्नात न्यूट्नीशिअन ही नवी शाखा तिच्या लक्षात आली. तिला त्यात खूपच रस वाटला. आणि मग आईवडील सांगतात म्हणून नाही, कुणी जवळच्या व्यक्तींनी केलंय म्हणून नाही तर स्वत:ला आवडली म्हणून तिने न्यूट्नीशिअन होण्याची करिअर निवडली. या करिअरमध्ये संशोधनाला वाव होता, परदेशी जाण्याची संधी होती. तिने एस.एन.डी.टी मधून डाएटिक्स अॅन्ड फूड सर्व्हिस मॅनेजमेंट ह्या कोर्सने करिअरची सुरुवात केली. तिथे पुढच्या अभ्यासाच्या दृष्टीने ग्रॅज्युअेशन पूर्ण करणं महत्त्वाचं होतं.
कॉलेजचं शिक्षण पूर्ण करताना तिला ही जाणीव होती की फक्त वर्गातलं शिक्षण पुरेसं नसतं. स्वत:मधला आत्मविश्वास वाढवण्यासाठी, कोणत्याही परिस्थितीला तोंड देण्याचं स्वत:मधलं धैर्य, साहस अजमावण्यासाठी बाहेरच्या मोकळया दुनियेतला वावर महत्त्वाचा असतो. तिने स्वत:ला अनेक एक्स्ट्न - करिक्युलर अॅक्टिव्हिटीजमध्ये झोकून दिलं. युथ फोरममध्ये स्वत:च्या वर्गाचंं प्रतिनिधित्व केलं. ती इंटरॅक्ट क्लब ऑफ पूना आणि रोटरॅक्ट क्लब ऑफ पूना अेअरपोर्ट यांची मेंबर आणि सेक्रेटरी म्हणून काम करत होती. क्लबच्या माध्यमातून लोकांना मदत करण्यात पुढाकार घेत होती. तिच्यात त्यामुळे आपोआप नेतेपणाचे गुण विकसित होत होते.
तिचं वक्तृत्व चांगलं होतं. तिला क्रॅन्सरग्रस्तांना मदत करण्याच्या कामात, एड्सग्रस्त लोकांना मदत करणाऱ्या `नारी' संस्थेच्या कामात भाग घेण्याची संधी मिळाली. गॅ्रज्युअेशन बरोबर तिचं व्यक्तिमत्त्व विकसित होत होतं.
तिला अजून खूप पल्ला गाठायचा होता. त्यासाठी पोस्ट ग्रॅज्युअेशन करायला हवं होतं. पण ते तिला स्वत:च्या हिमतीवर करायचं होतं.
आणि इथे तिला त्यासाठी लीला पूनावाला फाउंडेशनने एकदम हात दिला. ह्या वीस वर्षांच्या युवतीची जिद्द, पुढे स्वत:च्या हिंमतीवर काही करण्याची इच्छा, समाजाबद्दलची आस्था ह्या सगळयांमुळे तिची `लीला फेलो' म्हणून निवड झाली. न्यूयॉर्कमध्ये जाऊन स्पोर्ट सायन्स अॅन्ड न्यूटि्न्शन मधील पोस्ट ग्रॅज्युअेट डिप्लोमा तिने केला. आणि तिची ह्या क्षेत्रातील घोडदौड चालूच आहे. तिचे मध्यंतरी लग्न झाले आहे. पण त्याचा तिच्या करिअरवर परिणाम झालेला

हा सगळा तिचा प्रवास दिसतो तितका सहज झालेला नाही. तिच्या वाट्याला आंबट लिंबंच होती. तिने आपल्या आप्तमित्रांच्या मदतीने, स्वत:च्या सकारात्मक विचाराने त्याचं मधुर आयुष्यात रूपांतर केलं.

इथे तिला लीला पूनावाला यांच ट्न्स्टच्या अध्यक्ष या पदाच्या पलीकडचं रूप दिसलं. त्यांनी तिची नुसती विचारपूस केली नाही तर वैयक्तिकरित्या आर्थिक मदतीचा हात पुढे केला. लीला पूनावाला फाउंडेशन हे एक कुटुंब असल्याचा प्रत्यय येऊन अॅलिफिया सद्गदित झाली.

तिच्या अभ्यासात, कामात तो नेहमीच प्रोत्साहन देतो. आज त्या दोघांच्या सहजीवनात त्यांच्या छोट्या बाळाचा ताहेरचाही प्रवेश झालेला आहे. आई, वडील, भाऊ, सासू, सासरे, मैत्रिणी, शिक्षक प्रत्येकाने कोणता ना कोणता आनंद तिच्या जीवनात दिलाय.
